A comparison of vowel devoicing/deletion phenomena in English laboratory speech and German spontaneous speech*

چکیده
This paper continues the examination of deletion, reduction, and reorganization phenomena in spontaneous German speech1and adduces data from English laboratory speech to establish cross-linguistic similarities between vowel deletion in German and vowel devoicing in English. We describe how two sets of data were gathered: one of Standard Southern British English (S.S.B.E.) that establishes the ground-rules of devoicing in that accent; and one of spontaneous German speech gathered in the framework of the Verbmobil project, which mirror the English findings. A further aim of the paper is to show how the corpus can be exploited using relatively simple search techniques.

متن کاملVowel devoicing vs. mora-timed rhythm in spontaneous Japanese - inspection of phonetic labels of OGI_TS
This paper discusses two well-known phonetic-phonological phenomena of Japanese, vowel devoicing and mora-timed rhythm. Regarding vowel devoicing as a process of vowels getting consonantal, it may change the mora-templated syllable structures of Japanese, resulting in the deviation from mora-timed rhythm. To investigate spontaneous Japanese with comparison to other languages, the label data of ...
متن کاملFactors affecting utterance-final vowel devoicing in spontaneous Japanese
Investigation of spontaneous speech corpora has shown that vowel devoicing in Japanese is a statistical phenomena. However, factors behind vowel devoicing have not been fully studied. In addition, there have been no studies that specifically examined pre-pausal vowel devoicing. In this paper, we investigate vowel devoicing in the pre-pausal position, in particular, vowel devoicing occurring at ...
متن کاملNow you hear it, now you don't: vowel devoicing in Japanese infant-directed speech.
In this work, we examine a context in which a conflict arises between two roles that infant-directed speech (IDS) plays: making language structure salient and modeling the adult form of a language. Vowel devoicing in fluent adult Japanese creates violations of the canonical Japanese consonant-vowel word structure pattern by systematically devoicing particular vowels, yielding surface consonant ...
متن کاملPhrase-medial vowel devoicing in spontaneous French
This study investigates phrase-medial vowel devoicing in European French (e.g. /ty pø/ [ty ̊ pø] ‘you can’). Our spontaneous speech data confirm that French phrase-medial devoicing is a frequent phenomenon affecting high vowels preceded by voiceless consonants. We also found that devoicing is more frequent in temporally reduced and coarticulated vowels. Complete and partial devoicing were condit...
